Exports are a vital outlet for calf producing farmers.for to long the meat processors have being allowed and facilated by successive governments to take power off the farmer .any business can only survive with fair competition and the export market is the only other outlet a farmer has for his produce .no exports he can only sell to factory and take what they give you, exports vital for a fair and competitive market.

Live exports are vital for the Irish rural economy. Without it beef prices would collapse which would be devastating for Irish family farms and the rural economy. Irish exporters are highly regulated when it comes to animal welfare

What many who have signed this petition don't realise is the people behind it import a large number of cattle from Europe adding to an already overstocked market. Perhaps if cattle imports were stopped Irish farmers may fair better at the markets. On the plus side they are importing a lot of Flekvieh and the male calves are too valuable to export so hopefully this will reduce the number of unweaned calves being exported illegally. The petition also doesn't mention that animal welfare NGOs have tried to enter into sensible discussions but have been ignored.
