A Special Enrollment Period from March 15 to April 30 has been designated for individuals who find out they must pay a tax penalty for remaining uninsured during 2014. Health Action New Mexico is working to secure enrollment assistance for consumers who find out about the penalty when they file taxes. We envision a mutually beneficial partnership between enrollment counselors and tax preparers wherein consumers can get enrolled in health coverage on site when they find out about the penalty.

In order to build this partnership, we need to ensure the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange (NMHIX) continues funding for enrollment counselors throughout the state. Enrollment counselors are primarily financed by NMHIX. They can sign people up for Medicaid or exchange plans, provide information on each and every plan that is available, and provide essential one-on-one assistance for the uninsured.
