In the Democratic Republic of the Congo there live a tribe of Pigmies called the Mbuti (or Bambuti). They're traditionally hunter/gatherers. They live in small groups but in total, there are over 30,000 of them.

They live in the Ituri region. It's called that because the region isn't actually a province yet. It's on the north eastern part of the country, right on the boarder of Uganda and Southern Sudan.

Traditionally they are considered to be less them human by their neighbors. Pigmies are viewed as closer to animal than man. They traditionally traded with other tribes at the edge of the rainforest. Deforestation and ongoing conflict in the region has driven them from their home.

This exodus has compounded another tradition and gets more to what we're addressing. The Pigmies are often taken into servitude by other tribes as well as rebel groups for a variety of purposes. None of them result in pay or even enough food to sustain them beyond the most basic form of survival. They have never had any form of representation in the government.

The campaign will be working to change that. To call attention to the issue and to place pressure on three specific public officials with the power to affect the issue to make a change. International condemnation and diplomatic pressure do actually help in these situations.
