When editorial boards resign, as was the case with Lingua, libraries should, going forward, unsusbscribe or stop access to the old title and shift immediately to the new one. Libraries should also create a fund to support the financial costs of such changes. Liber could look into this and organize such a fund.

I sign this petition, coming from a South African university and in my capacity as president of the Linguistics Society of Southern Africa. We need to ask ourselves whether it is ethical to ask poor countries to pay huge subscription fees to be able to access their own research in private journals. It is even worse when journals cynically charge disproportionate fees as part of so-called open access or engage in double dipping. I support this petition. We, as academics and education professionals need to reclaim our scientific rights.
