This petition is to show support for the St. Joseph Public Library’s program, Drag Queen Story Hour. We need programs like this to affirm and support LGBT+ youth. These young people are under constant negative pressure that puts them at a higher risk for mental illness and suicide. Affirming programs and spaces make life easier for LGBT+ youth and reduce their likelihood for illness. We should not allow a minority within our community to dictate what kind of affirming programs are available for our entire community. The drag queens I have met are some of the best people I know. I would have loved my boys to be involved in this when they were young. Queens and kings are accepting, compassionate, and full of love. Why wouldnt you want your child to learn that.
What a great opportunity to start a conversation with children. People are different, but they’re all people and deserve to be treated well. If some parents aren’t ready for that conversation they should stay home.
Libraries have always been open to all people and freedom of information and thought. They are there to expand horizons. They do not censor information or people, but promote inclusion and caring in our communities.
Being part of a peer group that has experienced an overwhelming amount of suicide at such a young age, several due to sexuality. Public support and encouragement in the LQBTQ community is an invaluable resource that needs to be encouraged.
Showing LGBTQ kids in our community that who they are is accepted and loved here matters. And I want to be able to show my kids that being different is okay. I want to live in a city that supports that belief. I hope I do.
End the hate and stigma against marginalized groups and show children a world of acceptance and understanding.

Thank you, St. Joe libraries! I wish this existed when I was a kid. The backlash the library has faced only serves to prove the need for this event. Perhaps it will help the ignorant understand that we’re all just people and libraries are for everyone.
