Sadly another attempt to restrain the rights of people and organisations to express their view to their elected so-called representatives. We still have a democratic government, but this sort of thing on the statute book could so easily be misuesd by a Government whose ideas were rather less democratic.

Freedom of speech must be available to all, all year round, not least in the run up to a general election. And the third part of the bill is an attack on trade unions. It puts extra administrative burdens on unions in maintaining their membership lists and threatens union membership confidentiality. This is despite the Regulatory Policy Committee, the government’s red tape advisory body, telling the government to redo its assessment of the impact of part three of the bill on regulation of union membership systems.

This bill is a shameless attempt to take what was supposed to be tighter regulation of corporate lobbying, and turn it into an attack on grassroots civil society organisations. I believe it breaches basic rights on freedom of speech and association, and if it is passed in its present form, should be sent for review under the Human Rights Act and ECHR.
