Support Bilal, he’s someone we can all be proud to call Sen. Bilal Ayyub As a Professor, an accomplished Civil Engineer, a successful Businessman and as active Democrat, Dr. Ayyub has shown through the decades of hard work and dedication that not only does he understand the hopes and concerns of all residents of District 15, but that also he has the expert knowledge to tackle the major issues of infrastructure in Maryland. Dr. Ayyub is the right person to fill the State Senate vacancy and will hit the ground rnning on day one in Annapolis. Dr. Bilal Ayyub is shining example of the American Dream of how anyone can succeed as long as they apply themselves. Having earned his Batchelors degree, Dr Ayyub later came to the United States and earned both his Masters and Ph.D. in civil engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Ayyub is currently a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland (College Park) and the Director of the Center for Technology and Systems Management (CTSM) since 1983. He is an Affiliate Professor of Engineering and Public Policy, a Professor of Reliability Engineering, and a Professor of Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation. Recognized by several Engineering societies with many Awards for his work, Dr. Ayyub also is a recipient of 2003 citation from Governor Paris Glendening for “possitive contributions, leadership and distinguished service”. In 2006, he was appointed to the Higher Education Transition Work Group for Governor Martin O’Malley. In 2007, he received the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service for leading the development of the risk model for the hurricane protection system of New Orleans (Note: this award for Public Service is the fourth highest honor the United States Department of the Army can bestow upon a civilian.) He also served on Governor O’Malley’s Maryland Middle Eastern American Affairs Commission, and is presently serving on the Governor’s Emergency Management Advisory Council. Dr. Ayyub’s professional career is vast and diverse. He is also a business man serving as president of BMA Engineering, Inc. since 1987, a leading consulting firm for making intelligent decisions using risk and uncertainty analysis. Moreover, he has served on the board of several non-profit and for profit organizations including startup companies. He is an advocate for citizen participation in governance, diversity, civil liberties, and social justice. Dr. Ayyub has an extensive background in uncertainty modeling and analysis, risk assessment and management, and decision analysis. He has the capacity to address complex and diverse issues. He is the author and co-author of more than 600 publications in technical journals, conference proceedings, and reports. His publications include several textbooks that are widely used on many campuses worldwide. He has also been very active in local and national politics. His activities include membership in political clubs, political campaigns and fundraising events (such as, for Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, Congressman Chris Van Hollen and Maryland Senator Rob Garagiola), and establishing grass root organizations to engage underrepresented population groups in the political process. He is a former chair of a Democratic Party precinct in Legislative District 15.. He supported and held events for District 15 and 16 Maryland house members, and US congressional representatives. He was considered for a political appointment during the first term of President Obama as the Energy Information Administrator and was interviewed by the Office of Presidential Personnel. Most recently Dr. Ayyub co-chaired a Department of Homeland Security project on developing an ASME guidance document on the protection of critical assets, and chaired a project to create sector specific documents for asset protection of nuclear, spent fuel, petroleum, chemical, LNG, highway, subway and railway systems. He is a fellow of ASCE, ASME and SNAME.
