Hi, my name's Tom, and I'm a Chemistry student at the University of Sheffied. I do my degree because I am absolutely fascinated and obsessed by how things fit together on an atomic scale. That fascination drives me and it's what made me so happy to see the joy on the Rosetta team's faces when they accomplished something remarkable for the good of our species. It gives me some much needed hope for my own future. It makes me remember that we can do amazing things simply from the start point of asking 'Do you reckon we can do this?', and that's fantastic. What made me sick was to see people criticise Dr Taylor, a great man who has accomplished so much more than the sheltered, crybaby social justice warriors that bullied him to tears ever have or will, over a fucking shirt. I ask you, is that the state we are in? A man literally lands a probe on a comet travelling at mind-boggling speeds through space and all we can focus on is his fucking harmless shirt. It was a shirt for the love of God. To Dr. Taylor, please never feel like you owe any of these people an apology. You did nothing wrong and their fucking 'offence' is meaningless. Who cares if they think your being sexist. Everyone with half a brain cell knows that you aren't and you shouldn't let this damped an achievement you should be massively proud of. You don't just do amazing things, you give people like me hope for the future. By breaking boundaries for the good of humanity and still retaining that sense of wonder and joy at the things we humans can do if we put our mind to it. In decades to come, there are going to be scientists from my generation doing incredible things, and so many of them are going to talk about you. My take on the situation: Guy spends 10 years planning, working, stressing, worrying about something that will be one of the greatest accomplishments in human history and give hope to the future. A female friend creates a shirt for him. He tells her that he'll wear it to work on the landing day, to promote her brand, and because he also feels a little luckier with it. On a project like this, you need all the luck you can get. Guy comes to work in his lucky shirt and successfully lands the probe. Gets labeled a mysoginist and told that he's the reason why more women aren't in STEM careers (obviously bullshit). He's then forced to give a public apology for doing nothing wrong, in which he breaks down and cries. Why? Because he can't understand the hate. He's just been part of one of the greatest things in human history, and all people care about is a SHIRT... that his FEMALE friend made for him. He goes to websites and sees photos of the landing: tens of views. Discussion on his shirt: thousands and thousands of views. He cries for the sorry state of the world, and the feeling that we will never change. Mankind only cares for what is happening in the moment. The drama. They don't care about the future. I'm sorry, Dr. Taylor. But, if you ever see this comment, just know that there is at least one person out there that thinks that you are an inspiration.
