Support a Community Ice Rink in Government Camp / Welches
Initiated by Mt. Hood Hockey Club — a group of local families who currently drive over an hour both ways just to find ice time — this petition asks our local leaders to explore the creation of a community ice rink right here in the Mount Hood area.
Our mountain already welcomes thousands of visitors every year, but most activities center on snow sports. A community ice rink would create a year-round, family-friendly destination for locals and tourists — especially for those who want something fun and active to do indoors during Oregon’s long, rainy season.
An ice rink in Government Camp or Welches would:
• Provide kids’ sports opportunities like youth hockey teams, learn-to-skate programs, open skate hours, and figure skating lessons.
• Offer safe, healthy recreation for local families, homeschoolers, and visitors of all ages.
• Attract hockey leagues, schools, and figure skating groups from Portland and surrounding areas.
• Boost local tourism and revenue by giving visitors another reason to stay, play, and support local businesses.
• Strengthen our mountain community identity and give our youth more chances to learn teamwork, confidence, and discipline close to home.
We’re not asking for immediate funding — we’re asking Clackamas County Parks & Recreation, the City of Sandy, and the Mt. Hood Tourism Alliance to study the feasibility of a community or seasonal ice rink in our area.
Our community has the passion, the people, and the need. Let’s create a place where local families and visitors can come together on the ice — a new Mt. Hood tradition that supports our youth and celebrates our community spirit.
