Our oceans are critical to our survival. No matter the amount of resources we get out of the ocean now, one day it will run out. So why not protect it and find alternative less harmful resources to use, so that we can allow the ocean to flourish and then we can start using the resources of the ocean wisely.

There is a shortage of well managed MPAs in RSA. Having more MPAs is beneficial provided they receive the control and monitoring they require they are not going to be effective.

If we do to the oceans what we have done to the land then I fear for the survival of mankind

It is critical for the future that adequately large areas are protected to safeguard marine life in all its diversity. We know that there is much abuse/poaching and thus it makes sense to protect more. Though difficult to police, this is a practicality that will need to be considered but does not detract from the need. Rather, it enhances the need.

We've been given the earth to use but to use wisely, not destroy. Marine ecosystems have been 'out of sight & out of mind' and it's now critical to take action to protect them.
