Please let winter sports happen. My daughter is so upset that her first year of school basketball isn’t going to happen.

It is so important to keep our kids engaged, active and involved for their mental and physical well being. Being involved with sports will also help academically as their our goals that have to be met in order to play. By following a few simple guidelines, our kids and coaches will remain as safe as any other time throughout history.

The district is displaying major oversight in not considering how this impacts students who are counting on continuing sports at the next level. The privileged nature of deciding to suspend winter sports is grossly out of line for a Title I district such as ours. It shows how out of touch the board members are with students who desperately need sports for higher education, mental health, and physical health. Canceling winter sports will cause long term damage for the lives of many student athletes that the board will be directly responsible for based on this decision. The board needs to step out of their privileged socioeconomic position and consider how this is actually going to impact the students who depend on athletics.

Part of the student overall health is their mental health. If sports are taken away from them this will have a severe negative impact on their mental health and is not the best for them. Healthy athletic students are some of the lowest risk groups when it comes to the virus. There have been no documentation of sustained spread among students. Decisions like this are what is going to ruin students lives. There will never be a zero risk level. Stop the fear mongering and give the students their lives back. I am saying this as someone who has the virus and is at the end of my quarantine with my family. This shutdown madness needs to stop. We’ll wear the masks! Quit shutting everything down!

Students need this opportunity. They should be allowed to play. We as parents are aware of the risks and know what is best for our own children. Please give us the option to let our sons and daughters play.

I don’t even go to Columbia High anymore and the only sport I enjoyed watching was basketball, let the boys play with precautionary measures it’s only fair, they deserve a chance to make their senior highlight reels and get noticed by D1 schools because I’ve been watching and some of the players show real promise and who ever is reading this knows it’s Joe and Jay
