Recently, 1078 gallery applied for a permanent alcohol license with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
We took this action because we have outgrown the limits of the daily non-profit licenses we have been using until now for our art and music events. Events are an extremely important part of the gallery's revenue, especially with other funding sources in decline over the past few years.
The Chico City Council must approve our application, based on "public convenience and necessity." This issue is likely to come before them at their February 3rd meeting.
We believe that our application fits the criteria of "public convenience and necessity" because YOU—members of the public—want to be able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage when you attend an art or music event at the gallery.

The 1078 Gallery is a great center for art and music. This is a venue whose events are supported by beer sales and is one of the least likely places to cause problems as a result of alcohol sales. The atmosphere of the venue dissuades abusive consumption of alcohol.
Allowing this venue to serve alcohol would be very good for the local arts scene! As it is now there are very few places in Chico, other than Bars, where independent artists can perform with any kind of draw attached.
If the city won't fund arts organizations, especially one that has been the heart of the arts community for more than 30 years, then it should it empower them to be able to make their own way by allowing for this reasonable and appropriate resource to be tapped.
Profits from beer and wine make local music possible. It affords the freedom to book acts that are more niche or are not just popular sellouts. It provides the luxury of actually paying bands. If this is denied, you might as well just ban local music at the place entirely.
I don't drink, but I understand that nighttime venues need to be able to offer alcoholic beverages to drive enough revenue to survive. An art gallery is not a rave; let people enjoy themselves.
1078 does a wonderful job for artists in the area and I really enjoy their shows. Could use a nice glass of wine for teh solialization hour.
I attended an art show event here, and it was safe, entertaining, and well organized. I felt like the management here was responsible and they are dedicated to getting the arts out to the public. Butte County needs to maintain an art culture. The population here is deserving of culture, and should be encouraged. If serving beer and wine help to support the arts, then a beer license is a worthy pursuit.

As a volunteer and guest at 1078 I urge you to approve their application for a beer license. Being able to enjoy a drink while pursuing an art event or listening to music ads to the enjoyment of these experiences. It also allows a small, but important, revenue stream for the entirely volunteer staff.
