We, the undersigned residents and citizens of Harare and diaspora, respectfully petition the Harare City Council to consider renaming Rufaro Stadium to "Bob Marley Independence Stadium" in recognition of the profound historical and cultural significance of Bob Marley's performance at Zimbabwe's independence celebrations in 1980.

GROUNDS FOR PETITION:

  1. Historical Significance
  • Bob Marley's performance at Rufaro Stadium on April 18, 1980, marked Zimbabwe's independence celebrations
  • He was the only foreign artist invited to perform at this momentous occasion
  • Marley personally funded his entire band's travel to Zimbabwe to be part of this historic event
  1. Cultural Impact
  • His performance of "Zimbabwe" at the independence celebrations symbolized the culmination of the country's liberation struggle
  • The concert represented a powerful moment of unity and celebration for the newly independent nation
  • Thousands of Zimbabweans witnessed this historic performance at Rufaro Stadium
  1. Global Recognition
  • The performance helped bring international attention to Zimbabwe's independence
  • It strengthened cultural ties between Zimbabwe and Jamaica
  • The event has become a significant part of both Zimbabwe's and Bob Marley's legacy
  1. Educational Value
  • Renaming the stadium would serve as a permanent reminder of this historic moment
  • It would educate future generations about the connection between culture, music, and liberation
  • The name would preserve an important chapter in Zimbabwe's journey to independence
  1. Tourism Potential
  • A renamed stadium would become a significant cultural landmark
  • It would attract both local and international visitors interested in music and history
  • This could contribute to cultural tourism in Harare

PROPOSED ACTION: We request that the City Council:

  1. Consider this proposal to rename Rufaro Stadium to "Bob Marley Independence Stadium"
  2. Conduct necessary public consultations on this matter
  3. Create a commemorative plaque detailing the historical significance of the venue
  4. Organize an annual cultural event at the stadium to celebrate this legacy

Respectfully submitted

Marley’s revolutionary music spurred on the liberation fighters and his performance at the independence celebrations in 1980 was a fitting testament to the mutual ideals and commitment to the freedom of Africans that Bob Marley and the Zimbabwean liberation fighters shared.

It is was an important historical event and unfortunately education in a class room is limited, so identifying ways in which to educate outside of the class room is needed. As a British citizen who wishes to travel and have getaways that engulfs me and my Family in different cultures with as much information as possible is not only a fun and or interesting experience it also helps break barriers through filling in the gaps in knowledge and understanding
