Students should be allowed to opt out of AI assignments without consequences to grades or otherwise

We shouldn’t have to suffer consequences just because we don’t want to hurt the e environment or humanity.

I don't go to Bandon High School anymore but AI assignments shouldn't exist. It is ruining the environment.

AI can absolutely be misused, just like the internet or smartphones can, but saying it has only one use ignores how many real-world things it already helps with. AI is used in medical research sometimes, accessibility tools for disabled people, language translation, education (mainly for getting a more professional format for the assignment designed), coding assistance, fraud detection, weather prediction, and assisting with some creative work. It doesn’t replace human intelligence if used right, t’s a tool that depends on how people use it. If someone uses it lazily, yes, it can make them less thoughtful and seem dumb. But if used properly, it can help people learn faster, solve problems, and create things they couldn’t easily do by themselves.

EXACTLY. She is a attention seeker who doesn't do research. By the way, as someone who goes to the same school as her, this girl is the same person who thinks that people she hates or has different views from her are as evil as the Wehrmacht and Japanese Empire from WW2. I also shall point out she sent an email to every kid in the high school(myself included as she emailed all 4 grades) trying to get people to sign this petition containing misinformation, and yeah, when you read it. it sounds like she doesn't actually wanna do schoolwork. because our school does use Ai to help make assignments, and she's the only person I've seen who has an actual issue with that. because like I just said, she's basically saying "I don't wanna do school work, because it uses Ai to help make it." I bet if she ran the U.S government, it'd be a dictatorship. The stuff she claims of "Ai supports all these extreme bad things" is false, because if I asked Ai to be supportive of those bad things, it'd say "I'm sorry, but I can't do that" as it is required to be unbiased. heavily appreciate you commenting what you said, you stated the facts perfectly and did a better job describing what I would actually say. You would think teachers of all people would know how bad ai is.

The reason teachers are so vital is because they can communicate with students in ways that best convey the lesson material. Artificial intelligence does not know students needs and is incapable of adapting in the ways that help kids and teenagers learn. Assignments must be thought through in terms of curriculum, building on the previous lessons to allow for full understanding of the subject, and AI generated assignments do not fulfill that objective. They are not the best way to allow for effective learning. Students should have the right to demand a proper education from the institutions that are designed to serve them, and schools should not leave students who would otherwise be engaged in human-made lessons feeling as though their education is not important enough to warrant the time and care of real people.

AI is a tool not a substitute for a teacher. I have students in the district who speak constantly about how AI has become a crutch that Bandon School district uses because did doesn't have teachers. Glad to see students standing up for their own education! I support this.

Alright, if you want blunt, here it is: this still falls apart the second anyone seriously reads it. You’re making two different claims and neither is supported well: ) “AI assignments are low quality. Okay, that could be a real argument. But you didn’t prove it. Where are examples? Which classes? Which assignments? What specifically was “below level”: grammar, depth, accuracy? Right now it just sounds like complaining because the work feels easy or disorganized. 2) “Students should face zero consequences for opting out.” This is where it completely loses credibility. Schools don’t hand out grades for vibes. If you opt out of required work, you will get a zero unless you propose a replacement that meets the same standards. Saying “no consequences” makes you sound like you’re trying to dodge work, not fix a problem. Also, this list: > racism, violence, homophobia, predators, etc. That’s not an argument, it’s a buzzword dump. By that logic, you’d have to ban the internet, books, and half the curriculum. If you’re going to claim harm, you need specific examples of AI assignments causing those issues in your school. Otherwise it just looks like you’re throwing extreme labels around to get attention. And here’s a big logistical problem you’re ignoring: If a student opts out, who creates the alternative assignment? How does the teacher ensure it’s equal in difficulty? How do they manage that for multiple students across multiple classes? You’re basically asking teachers to double their workload with no system in place. If you want this to be taken seriously, your demand needs to look more like this: Students can request a teacher-created alternative assignment The alternative must meet the same learning objectives Requests must be made in advance Teachers are given guidelines (not unlimited extra work) That’s a policy. Ai is a tool, the problem isn't that it's a machine. The problem is the person who uses it. I use Ai as a tool at home, mainly for creating a image, in which I make something original out of it. American School's use Ai to help make an outline for the assignments so the assignment looks more formal, still factual info. yes, people have used Ai for malicious purposes such as not stating it's an Ai image or video and stating it's real, but think about it, that can also be said for Photoshop as well, because I know some people have used Photoshop as a weapon, along with taking things out of context as well. There's a good and bad side to Ai. I use it as a tool to assist me, and I'm honest. Those guys on facebook try to state it's real and spread misinformation, we are not the same.

As a Parent, Full chest I agree. AI written assignments not only are a Lazy Excuse for Teaching. AI is Known for being obscenely inaccurate to the point of straight misinformation. So not only does the kid get Bad Education they get Education they have to Unlearn Later.

Quite honestly I'm disappointed in the school for even allowing AI assignments, yes you should have to learn to work BESIDE AI for REAL LIFE SITUATIONS, but AI should never be a substitute for real learning, and the fact the school is supporting this when jobs are being lost due to the overuse of AI. Your a teacher, it's your job to teach.
