Students at UNLV have had a recent 10% increase in tuition 2009, and a 17% percent increase has been approved to be implemented into student cost over the next few years. We receive increases in tuition, but it seems as though we are not getting much back for what we spend. Many students struggle to find classes on the days and times they need. Since the budget cuts began, there are 1,000 less class sections, and 840 less faculty. Combined with a lack of advising staff, students have had to postpone taking certain classes and/or graduating from one semester to up to a year.

As students we propose that UNLV give us more class options. One option is that UNLV could hire student teachers, student advisors, and tutors for lower level classes for credit or a small monthly stipend, thus eliminating much of the burden to current instructors so that they can better assist students, and perhaps teach other classes.

We also need a meeting with those in the government that determine the funding for UNLV, as this is the cause of the problem. UNLV ranks 46 out of 50 in the nation, spends the lowest amount on staff (5.9% compared to other universities), and provides Nevada with many resources. Yet, higher education is the first item cut when it comes to the state budget. We need a change in this system.
