As a high school student and future teacher, I see the benefits of assigning homework. It's a great tool for review and helps students know whether or not they truly understand the material. However, the amount of homework CMS students are assigned is outrageous. We do not have time to involve ourselves in physical activity, time with family and friends, extracurricular activities, or activities that would allow us to explore our passions. The lack of sleep excess homework causes leads to weak immune systems, which put me in the hospital this year. In order to be effective students and members of society, students should spend no more than thirty minutes a night on homework, and no more than an hour per night when studying or project work is required.

As a teacher, I do believe that homework serves its purpose. It helps students to revisit lessons of the day and it is a great way to push parental involvement. However, I also believe that students don't need hours of homework to learn. Effective teachers use the entire school day to teach holistic lessons. Therefore, I see no need for more than 30 minutes MAX on homework. Students need to be able to play, participate in extracurricular activities, and spend time with family. Too much homework could easily lead to students feeling defeated and stressed, which could lead to dropouts or lack of a desire to pursue higher education.

Would love to spend quality time with my grandchildren. Most of their after school and weekend activity is spent doing homework. They have very little time to enjoy outside activities, socializing with family and just basic needs for well rounded personalities. No time for physical activities due to amount of homework. Teachers dictate in school activity as well as exercising total control of what should be personal time away from school. Homework should be allocated on a controlled basis so as not to overload students and allow personal time to relax and live a normal and healthy lifestyle. .

Creativity stems from play time and extra family time shouldn't be home work time.

Homework volume is too high and not assigned in a coordinated way across classes. The idea seems to be more is better, without real regard to the purpose and goal of each assignment. I'd suggest the teachers share a homework time budget for students where they only have x hours/week and per night of homework, not unlimited as it is today. My kids spend more hours on school than a full time job and work 7 days a week due to teachers having no limit on homework time and no coordination between classes. I'd like to see kids clocking in with time spent on homework and reports going to school leadership and parents on the real time being spent by kids in various classes. Then the issue could be managed so kids have time to learn and be kids with free time too. Today's method is not healthy nor effective for optimum learning.
