Students Living at Charles River/Grad Shouldn't Have to Pay for the Mistakes of the Few
An email was recently sent out to the students living at Charles River/Grad saying in light of constantly having to call locksmiths to fix penny-rigged doors, we are all being charged as compensation. This is highly unjust, being that the majority of us don't do this. Their main argument is for security purposes, but if they were so concerned about security, they would have replaced the doors with something more secure by now. Whether this action is illegal or not, it's moralistically unjust.

I have finished drafting a formal letter to the housing administration that outlines our specific objections to these collective charges. Legal counsel is currently reviewing our documented evidence of the existing door malfunctions. Expect a report on their official response once I receive a reply.

The volume of support from residents has reached a critical level that allows us to move forward with a formal meeting request to the administration. Counsel is currently reviewing the lease terms regarding these collective charges to ensure our upcoming discussion is grounded in binding policy.

If you don't want the doors penny-rigged... Install new doors. Don't bother trying to pretend that you haven't known for years already that this has been happening.
Under no circumstance will I pay for the crimes of others. DCL needs to either find the culprits or suck it up and pay themselves. They are being fundamentally lazy by passing the bill onto students.
This is wrong and basic exploitation of college students. Unjust for a school centerd on social justice!
Have your CA's find out who has been rigging the doors with pennies. Why charge the mass of people simply because you are too lazy to catch the real perpetrators. Don't relegate an entire group of people simply because you are unwilling to see us as individuals, most of whom are innocent.
I am in complete agreement. There was a penny lodged in my door in 113 and I actually tried to get it out because I understand the safety concerns and swiping a card isn't that hard. Why should I be punished then for trying to help?

DCL is ridiculous at Brandeis University. With the cost of living, they should have more than enough funds to replace the doors...and my ceiling which is leaking...and the water pressure...and the sofas...and the appliances... and the spiders... (not the spiders, but everything else).

To fix a penny rigged door is not actually a lot...if you charge everyone in grad even just a penny (ironically) you're making a stupid profit. Stop profitting off the backs of students you already put into debt with such high tuition!!
