It sends a sad message at a university to punish civil disobedience in the same manner as one would punish regular misbehavior. I sincerely hope that the university will reverse course on this decision.

This last week I helped to catalog a video of the 2003 AFSCME union strike, when a number of U of M student occupied then-president Bruininks' office in support of the striking staff members. Whose Diversity? is part of this same longstanding and effective tradition of non-violent student protest at the U of M. Please support it with me.

University's role should be to encourage dissent and a engender positive change in society. These student's, in creating critical conversations about barriers faced by students of color, have created an opportunity and opportunity for umn to make a decision about where the University stands. The punishment of these students is an indictment of the U's values. Your focus should be on social justice rather than punitive repercussions.
