Students First - Save Mr. Calvert!
As society has changed the role schools play in our children's lives has changed. Schools need to be a safe haven for our children now more than ever before, helping children learn to deal with difficulties they may face at home or school. Guidance Counselors play a huge role in many students lives offering guidance to students and family members of students who have learning disabilities, problems adjusting to different environments, who have behavioral problems, who come from broken homes, and many other issues that students face daily. Guidance Counselors help students discuss their problems, thoughts, and feelings while building non-judgmental relationships based on trust and respect in a confidential setting. The prevention and intervention activities implemented by Guidance Counselors are integrated into all aspects of student’s lives can be life changing and in some cases lifesaving.
It takes an incredibly special person to be a Guidance Counselor. At Livermore Elementary School in McLean Co. Kentucky, Mr. Jonathan Calvert is that “Incredibly Special Person”. He has taught our children the value of kindness, the strength in doing the right thing, and ways to cope when they don’t know how to deal with certain situations. He has been a positive male role model to so many children in our community, including my son’s, who come from broken homes. He fights every day to make students’ lives easier especially those that do not have a strong home life. Mr. Calvert’s intervention has been life changing for so many children of this community.
Mr. Jonathan Calvert is a leader in our community who advocates on behalf of his students to develop a positive learning environment where each student can thrive daily. He builds on students’ strengths, while helping them identify and manage their challenges. Mr. Jonathan Calvert holds a unique role in our small school. He is a leader and advocates for the wellbeing of the whole child, including a student’s academic, career and social/emotional development. The children in this community trust Mr. Calvert, they look up to him, and in so many ways depend on him. Livermore Elementary School and the children of this community need Mr. Jonathan Calvert, without him, sadly many children will just get lost and forgotten in the system.
It has come to my attention that the current Livermore Elementary School Teacher Principal, Mrs. Kelly Melton, will be terminating Mr. Jonathan Calvert’s Employment at the end of this school year. My UNDERSTANDING is due to a lack of funding Livermore Elementary School must eliminate at least one position. Funding for Curriculum Coaches that the McLean County School System had been receiving has ended, eliminating those positions. Several Teachers in those positions have tenure, therefore, space must be made for those Teachers with tenure who cannot be terminated. Mr. Jonathan Calvert does not have tenure, his job is not protected.
I am asking you to sign this petition today to show your support of how important it is that Mr. Jonathan Calvert remain employed as a Guidance Counselor at Livermore Elementary School where he can continue to advocate for the children of our community.
