We, students from the Baltic Sea Region, stress that it is our future that is being negotiated in Copenhagen. Global leaders immediately need to agree on an ambitious, binding and fair climate treaty that will not compromise our future: 1. Emissions targets must be in accordance with climate science. The aim of the global climate treaty should be to stabilize carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere at 300 ppm at the end of the century. 2. We need to protect and revitalize ecosystems through a global framework similar to that for climate. The state of many ecosystems is as alarming as the climate, for example, the rate of species extinction is now 1000 times higher than the "natural" background rate. 3. Climate change should be recognized as a human rights issue, as it affects basic rights such as the right to life, water and freedom from hunger. Developed countries need to take the largest responsibility for mitigation and also provide sufficient funds for adaptation in developing countries, in order to ensure room for poverty alleviation. We believe in your ability to take strong and crucial decisions. We are committed to make the transition to a sustainable society, through life-style changes, education, as well as technological and social innovation. The petition is based on the Baltic Sea Region Students' Declaration on Climate Change that was adopted by the Students Parliament of the Baltic University Programme in April 2009.
