Stop the Credit Bureaus from Selling our Confidential Information

A loophole in the law (Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999) allows the credit bureaus, financial institutes and others to sell our confidential information at will to literally thousands of affiliates and marketing companies both here and abroad… and we wonder how Identity Theft has become the #1 consumer crime in America today.

“They’re allowed to share your information with those affiliates even if you say no,” said Ed Mierzwinski of Penn PIRG. “That’s how bad the law is. So I blame this on Congress.

In fact, thousands of companies simply buy our information from the credit bureaus and resell it both on and off line … and we wonder how our personal information gets on the internet.

Some of these same folks are allowed to sell our confidential information even if we instruct them not to. In other words, you can opt-out, ask to be deleted, and subscribe to all the identity theft protection services available, but until this loophole is corrected, we all run the risk of being a victim of identity theft or worse.

If that isn’t bad enough, many of these same companies that sell our confidential information have the audacity to market and sell identity theft protection programs, essentially offering to protect us from the very folks that they sold our information to in the first place.

Sign the petition and let Congress know that your Confidential Information is Not For Sale!
