The importance of the RT service stems from the independent role it plays in providing student services such as welfare support, signposting and emergency contact outside working hours. Most Importantly, RTs work as an impartial observer to security’s operation. They compliment security’s role by providing independent view and support to students in difficult cases including drug search, fire alarms, serious injuries..etc. It is, therefore, essential that the RT operations run as smoothly as possible and we can be available for both students and security when needed.

The suggested changes will immediately lead to compromise of the UK regulations and hindrance to university operations. In the spirit of being there for students and security, the best suggestion is to only consider immediate contact time with students as work time, which is an average of the total call time + drop in+ meet the students. The standby time should be considered standby at home and therefore not considered part of the total work time.
