The streetcar does not serve the greater Omaha metro and outlying cities. It is extremely narrow in scope. More attention needs to be paid to improving the public transportation that already exists in order to serve all residents. More bus routes, more dedicated bike lanes.

As appealing as the notion of a streetcar system for Omaha may be, drawing on romanticized images from history, the costs of this project, both in financial terms and disruption to the community, will far exceed any conceivable benefits. The debacle that is the “high speed rail” project between San Francisco and Los Angeles should be a warning, not a model.
