We the undersigned are a group of Graduate Youth Campers. We note with great concern the recent developments that are affecting the two remaining Youth Development and Apprenticeship Centres at Persto Praesto and Chatham. We believe that these developments threaten the existence of this programme that has continued to create a wide cross section of exemplary citizens who would have otherwise been lost to the vagaries of society. We share the view of and support the personnel at these remaining centres and the yeoman service they have given in providing proper guidance and care to young men and women in Trinidad and Tobago. The Youth Development and Apprenticeship Centre, formerly known as the Youth Camp, is the only programme designed originally and specifically to cater to the needs of “at risk” youth in our society. These are youths who are exposed to socio-economic challenges such as poverty, teen pregnancy, intra – familial violence, drug use and abuse, absenteeism from School, lack parental care, support and guidance, have severe literacy challenges and possess little or no opportunities for training in their immediate environment. These challenges place the potential applicant at a disadvantage in achieving academic, social or career goals. This programme is very immediate, necessary and essential. As such we implore you and your organisation to join us in ensuring that the Youth Development and Apprenticeship Centres are re-vamped, upgraded and properly funded so that they may continue to operate efficiently, effectively and with purpose.
