I have recently visited Newcastle University and seen on the boards surrounding the repair work on the Armstrong building that you were preserving history and found it ironical that you should be dismantling Emerson Cavitation Tunnel,the history of which exceeds Newcastle University by decades. I believe that the outcry from a large international would make you rethink your decision and come up with a more plausible solution to the relocation of this institution that is not only steeped in the local history but one that has worldwide historical significance...

I am very sorry to hear about this new. I worked at the Emerson Cavitation Tunnel at Newcastle University. This decision should be definetly reconsidered. It should stay in its current location. Otherwise this unthougtful decision will negatively affect the University's reputation.

Having done my bachelor's degree at ncl and anticipating to return for a master's I am shocked at how this "decision" has come to pass. If ncl university is to continue to meet the research demands of being a Russell group university, we must remember what has happened to other facilities that have been moved off the main campus, how much they get used, how this will impact the amount of research that is likely to happen as a consequence of the move...not to mention the initial cost and elevated maintenance costs.
The Marine Technology department was one of the first departments at ncl university , when it was Armstrong College of Durham. If the university goes ahead with this decision whilst ignoring the voices of one of its FOUNDING DEPARTMENTS it will be a sorry day.
If campus eye sores are the flavour of the month, why not continue the focus to the Claremont building.

I believe the relocation of the Emerson cavitation tunnel is a clear and distinct oversight by the university, the university seems to be prioritising the aesthetics of buildings on campus, over the actual purpose of the university facilities, this equates to failing both staff and students, and the university should think long and hard about what it's priorities are, and where it should be focusing it's efforts. If this goes through the university will be guilty of failing its prime purpose.

We already have a gallery in the University. The Hatton gallery. We are a Russell Group university yet you want to take away the research opportunities. Are you going to pay for travel to Blyth?

As a former PhD student and tunnel team member for many years I am at a loss as to what to say here. It is just exasperating. The Emerson Cavitation Tunnel contributes to the lions share of research funding and research in the department and interfaces with our peers around the world with much larger and advanced facilities with little or no effort, just excitement and trust. Without the tunnel? Well there I run out of words and remember all of the shipyards on the Tyne.
To destroy this facility to hand out a fake PhD to a fake politician is the height of short sightedness. I whole heartily support this petition and also find it sad that the staff who have not helped the facility and blocked progress in the past, now seek to pad their CV’s with the move instead of fighting to keep it the legend it is.

I hope that the Executive Board members of the university reconsider the moving of the Emerson Cavitation Tunnel to Blyth (off campus) and find an appropriate solution to save the reputation of the ECT and let it serve the international academic research in due course.

A cavitation tunnel is a precious tool for hydrodynamicists and researchers. From a scientific and historical point of view Emerson Cavitation Tunnel should be put forward and stay in a dynamic scientific environnement.

I have heard that Emerson Cavitation Tunnel of Newcastle University will be relocated to a new site called Blyth on the North Sea and I am very concerned about this plan for its impacts on research studies, consultancy works and reputation of the school in future.
As you may be well aware of that the tunnel has been one of the major and well-known world-wide facilities for marine propulsion investigations and also unique facility in the UK. In addition the cavitation tunnel has made possible for the School to collaborate/contribute to EU Framework programmes, antifouling paint, renewable energy and ice studies and other important areas. Since the tunnel has been part of the School and the School of Marine Science and Technology has been a member of the Advisory Council of International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC). Without the presence of the tunnel and its contributions it wouldn’t be the case.
Furthermore the ECT as a facility should be integrated with the towing tank, workshop and other facilities in the campus rather than off campus to obtain efficient work. Historically the School has a world-wide reputation since the first establishment of the University when the cavitation tunnel was already there. Therefore the history of the school (marine technology) backs to the history of the tunnel.
Based on the above information I would like you and the Executive Board members to reconsider to move the Emerson Cavitation Tunnel to Blyth (off campus) and find an appropriate solution to the problem. Otherwise the current plan will cease the cavitation tunnel in operation in due course, hence will jeopardise the reputation of the school.
