On the 8th of November of last year, The People of the State of Florida made their voice heard. In a 71%-29% landslide approval, the State of Florida relinquished a degree of control to the people by allowing those with certain ailments to be prescribed medical cannabis.

There has been an awakening in this country. As healthcare costs, nonviolent banned-substance offenses, and individual rights-crippling regulations skyrocket, we have witnessed a society that begs for a return to a simple notion on which this nation was founded: Perhaps, in a nation with more rules than we can count, a return to freedom of individual choice regarding our health and will improve the overall wellness of the people.

On the 3rd of January the Gulf Breeze City Council, in an act of political cowardice and deference to state advisory regulation, unanimously passed the first reading of Ordinance 01-17, which provided for a moratorium on prescription of medical cannabis within its jurisdiction. This constitutes a betrayal of the notion that local solutions in application of Amendment 2 (and other issues in our society) are a far superior way to address problems than allowing monolithic state and federal entities to dictate local behavior.

Choice has long been a rallying cry of those who seek to expand upon the American experiment of maximized human freedom. In this regard, the two-party party paradigm need not apply to this nonpartisan issue. This is not a Republican vs. Democrat issue, but instead one that acts as a referendum over whether or not The People believe their rights are derived from the permission of government or the nature of the individual. I hope you will stand with us.
