The Jazz Band has spent lots of their precious time attending to rehearsals. We, as a group, chose the song Imagine to dedicate this song to Mrs. Anderson. It was our choice to do this extra thing, so we should have the choice to perform or not. Dr. Dale is forcing us to play at graduation, which misses the 7th grades out on their fun time, and the 8th graders missing out on sitting onstage with their peers.

Updates

I have been hearing from so many of you who are frustrated that our hard work is being turned into a forced obligation. Mrs. Anderson taught us to value our own musical choices but Dr. Dale refuses to listen to that perspective. We are currently preparing to bring these concerns directly to the administration before the ceremony takes place.

June 12, 2018

Seeing so many of you rally behind our band is overwhelming. My heart aches for Mrs. Anderson and having our music silenced would feel like losing a final chance to honor her properly. Thank you for showing Dr. Dale that our autonomy matters.

The purpose of Jazz Band may be to play, but it is also to have fun. How can you have fun by taking time out of your fun time with your friends to make you and the eighth graders bored and tired at the graduation? However, like Leroy, I think that jazz band members should have a choice between playing and not playing at the graduation, but first let the eighth graders decide if they want the jazz band to play at the graduation so they can graduate from the school the way they want. Jazz Band means playing, but it also means fun, and what Dr. Dale is planning for the Jazz Band is NOT fun (in my opinion).

Hey its leroy here, I think that it is the choice of the band students to decide if they want to do a band perfomance or not. The eighth graders diserve a great graduation where they don't need to sarcifice their time to when they should be sitting with family and having fun. It clearly seems that most kids in band and also out of band do not want this performance to go on. Dr.Dale should reconcider and cancel the band performance. Instead Dr.Dale should have the seventh graders and sixth graders play for the eighth graders. So then the eighth graders in band can also see what an amazing thing they have been a part of during their time in Western Middle School.

8th graders have already sacrificed so much and they shouldn't have to sacrifice their own graduation. From a parent's point of view, they want to see their children on stage with the rest of the kids.

I think the jazz band should not do the concert if they do not want to do it, OR only the students that agree to perform should do it. But if you are not going to perform, you should not sign up for the jazz band next year.

I believe you guys should be allowed to choose if you would like to play and not be forced.

It should be your choice. You made it through the seventh grade year so you shouldn't have to miss your special seventh grade privileges like fun time
