The El Pescador "Jungle Tour" is a detriment to the people who live here and a threat to the natural environment.
The new El Pescador "Jungle Tour" on Isla Mujeres uses four wheel all terrain vehicles (ATVs). Isla Mujeres is 650 metres (2,130 ft) wide with a paved perimeter road. There is no "jungle" on this" jungle tour". There are homes and protected beaches where sea turtles and crabs find shelter.
Running ATVs through this area on a residential street creates loud engine noise. The tour leaders encourage using horns and revving the motors to make the ride on our paved street seem more exciting.
Since the island is less than half a mile (0.65km) wide, the noise goes across the whole island as the tours race through the streets. When they come up on the side close to the Bay those on the Caribbean side can hear the rumble of the loud motors. When they go down the Caribbean side, the homes closer to Cancun are still blasted with the noise and vibrations of the tour.
The tours run every day, including Sundays, from a little before noon until four or five in the afternoon. The residents in the area are forced to hear loud engines noises every day for many hours.
We have tried to contact the owner but it was difficult to find out who that was. We now have this information. We will discuss the problem covered in this petition with him. It is important that he understand that this is NOT just a group of homeowners complaining about noise. This ATV tour running all day past turtle conservation areas, a cemetery, a school, a church and a hospital as well as private homes is not an activity that benefits Isla Mujeres as a whole. We know that the tour company is concerned with the future of Isla Mujeres.
We question whether the "jungle tour" has obtained any permits or insurance to legally operate ATVs on a residential street. We are certain that the name of the tour is misleading.
The ATVs ride in a line of up to a dozen on the main street of the island. They often ride two next to each other causing on coming traffic to have to move to avoid accidents. We have seen children without seat belts or safety gear on these ATVs. We have seen parents in one ATV guiding children in another ATV behind them. There have not been any bad accidents yet, but this is a new tour. With little regard for safety, there will be an accident.
The ATVs do go off the road in one spot. The machines tear around the small grassy area at a public beach on the Caribbean that is used by locals and visitors. It is a popular turtle nesting area and the damage being done to the sand where the turtles come in to nest will make the beach harder for the turtles to use to lay their eggs.
We would like this "jungle tour" to be stopped. The tour operator can modify the ATVs to make them less noisy and restrict them to single file, 10 km speed and driving only on the paved street where the environment will not be damaged. Safety equipment, helmets and belts, can be provided to the tourists paying for the Jungle tour.
The other alternative is to bring the ATVs to the mainland, where there is jungle to tour. There is no reason to leave Cancun to visit Isla to take a Jungle Tour. Use the beaches, visit the ruins and art work, walk through the colonias and visit the shops and restaurants... there are so many ways to enjoy a visit to Isla Mujeres without damaging the island or disturbing those who are enjoying the beaches.

No existe una "jungla" en este viaje a la selva". Hay casas y playas protegidas en donde las tortugas marinas y cangrejos encontrar albergue.

La otra alternativa es que el ATV al continente, donde hay selva de excursión. No hay ninguna razón para dejar de visitar Isla Cancún a tomar un viaje a la Selva. Utilice las playas, visitar las ruinas y obras de arte, caminar por las colonias y visitar las tiendas y los restaurantes... hay muchas maneras de disfrutar de una visita a Isla Mujeres sin dañar la isla o molestar a los que disfrutan de las playas.
