The Town of Southbury is proposing to install fuel tanks containing 20,000 gallons of fuel including 10,000 gallons of gasoline in the center of Town on Peter Road. This is more fuel than what took down the World Trade Center on September 11th. Human error and lightning strikes are the two most common causes of explosions/fires with these tanks. The tanks will be located across the street from Rochambeau Middle School, adjacent to a church which operates a daycare, adjacent to one of the Town’s largest shopping centers, next to a popular restaurant, across the street from the Town’s emergency radio tower, and the Town’s emergency electrical generator. The property where the tanks will be installed is already used by the local fire department to conduct fire training exercises; the property has a firearm shooting range and a gravel pit operation with large machinery conducting rock crushing operations. This plan is dangerous to the entire center of Town. More appropriate locations are currently owned by the Town for location of these tanks.
