This is a largely unregulated industry which is damaging our ecology whilst simultaneously avoiding taxes etc on the considerable proceeds obtained; it should be stoppedboth for the sake of bio-diversity & to reduce tax avoidance & money laundering opportunities.

This is a ridiculous practice if you stop to consider the significat reduction in numbers of eels in recent years.

Eels are an essential part of the food chain for animals in this country and they need to be protected so that their numbers do not drop so low as to put their survival, and those who rely on them, in danger. Perhaps other countries should take better care of their own wildlife and not try to buy ours!

This export has a far-reaching effect. It is not just the eels, whose population has declined so drastically. Otters living in freshwater rely a lot on eels as prey and so this is also effecting them. It is quite likely that the reason otters are taking more fish from domestic ponds and fish farms is that they aren't finding the wild prey. This export is effecting all freshwater biodiversity so should be stopped.
