Information received this Spring on the Wye estuary: In 1997, 50 tonnes of baby eels/ elvers are reputed to have been caught and exported, mostly to the Far East. This year, late in the elver season, only 1 KILO had been caught for the entire river. We are on the cusp of extinction.

Many thanks to everyone who has signed and commented on this petition. Our immediiate priority work is seeking funding for the saving from export and restocking to our waters of as many juvenile eels as we can this spring (2017). As soon as the restocking is completed we will be hitting the Press with the official lodging of this petition, and will be lodging it with government, the EU, and local M.Ps . We will continue to press incessantly, using the support of your signatures, and will relentlessly campaign until this trade is closed down.

This is a senseless waste of a vital stage in an important species.

we must do more to protect our endangered wild species; this is certainly one such, depleted for the sake of greed and profit.

We cannot let this nonsense continue. Extinction of an iconic UK species for the benefit of a few greedy businesses and the palettes of a few gourmet diners.
