Apart from being endangered, elvers are also an import food source for birds & fish. Another case of profit being more important than life. Disgusting.

Since the eels are on the red list, the elvers should only be exported to nature reserves with highest standards. If in doubt, we should keep them here. Fines for any illegal activities should be enormous and payable by the exporter.

Dated 25.05.2019: We are hereby RE-LAUNCHING this petition to gather thousands more signatures and keep the pressure on the unsustainable export trade. We now know that the government has permitted the export of over half of all elvers caught on our rivers since 2010. Many of these eels appear to be headed for restocking in mitigation of EU hydropower projects, which are, according to recent studies, the biggest killer of mature eels in rivers. Catches of baby eels on our river estuary continue to collapse, and mature eels are rapidly disappearing. The exception to this is where they have been restocked by conservation groups. And yet elver fishing for export is still permitted right through until the end of May.

We have received an update in response to our petition from George Eustace, Secretary of state at the time, in which he states among other things that since 2010 over half the total catch of Severn estuary elvers were sent abroad for stocking in Europe. The latest information on the run of elvers this year on the Wye is catastrophic. The few elvers being caught are being weighed-in in grammes on a river that once saw tonnes being weighed-in in one night. We appear to be in extinction phase ...

A lot of effort has gone into cleaning up the River Don in South Yorkshire, eels used to be common before industrialisation, this drastically reduces the chances of them ever returning!
