Petition to Stop the Barred Owl Kill Plan!
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has proposed a wasteful, ineffective, and inhumane plan to kill 450,000 barred owls over the next 30 years—all at a staggering cost of $1.35 billion. Humane Action Pennsylvania calls on the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to immediately halt this misguided initiative and instead invest in real conservation solutions.
Why This Plan is a Disaster:
- A $1.35 Billion Boondoggle – At an estimated $3,000 per owl, this plan diverts critical funding from more effective conservation efforts.
- A Futile “Whac-a-Mole” Strategy – Killing barred owls creates habitat vacuums that will quickly be filled by new owls, making this an endless, ineffective cycle.
- An Ecological and Ethical Crisis – Barred owls are a native species protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Punishing them for adapting to habitat changes is unjust and dangerous.
- Collateral Damage to Other Wildlife – Nighttime shootings and potential lead ammunition could harm other species, including the very Northern Spotted Owl this plan is supposed to protect.
A Better Way Forward:
Instead of spending $45 million per year on a failing strategy, we demand that DOGE:
- Halt Federal Funding – Stop taxpayer dollars from being wasted on mass owl killings.
- Invest in Habitat Restoration – Focus on protecting and restoring old-growth forests, the real solution for Northern Spotted Owl conservation.
- Redirect Resources to Proven Conservation Strategies – Support science-based recovery plans that protect biodiversity without unnecessary killing.
- Stand up for wildlife! Stop the slaughter of 450,000 owls and demand that our government prioritize real conservation over reckless destruction.
