Abuse and neglect should have never happened in a facility that suppose to care for people, let alone death. Shut it down!

As the mother of an Autistic Son who was placed in Carlton Palms, I say it should have been closed along time ago. My son was only there 4 months and suffered such malnutrition, impacted bowels, was not properly groomed and upon stating my concerns I was told most residents are not checked on. So I assume that meant they can do what ever they want to these helpless individuals. I understand as a parent feeling so desperate for relief, that some don't want to accept the reality that abuse is going on there. I witnessed it, I live regretting what my son endured those months of abuse. But unless we come together and force the system to improve when we are gone our children won't have a chance. As a society we need to foster and demand morality from and for all living beings. Even one incident is one to many.

I am a former employee and I can tell you that many things go on at Carlton Palms that are either overlooked or ignored. I genuinely cared for and advocated for my residents. When signs of abuse took place, I reported them and almost every time nothing happend. I witnessed other staff abusing residents and when reported , again nothing happend. The thing people don't realize is that place has cliches...the supervisors are friends with staff and do what they can to cover their asses. I have seen other staff take residents into bathrooms and shut the door, then I would hear lapping and hitting and even banging as if they were being thrown against the door. THIS PLACE IS SHADY and as a mother, I could not imagine my child, young ornood being treated this way. These residents have no control over their behavior and that is why they are there, however, Carlton Palms will hire anybody with a clean background but no experience. I advise anyone thinking of putting their child there NOT TO! Your child will be abused, I have no doubt about that.

While it is sad that the state of Florida does not provide adequate services to these families, they need to be forced to do so. Places such as Carlton Palms need to be closed.

I agree with Jayne B. Do NOT close the only place in Florida that can take individuals with developmental disabilities who have the most challenging of behaviors. Our son lives there and we know they love and care for him. We visit him nearly weekly and everyone is always pleasant and know our son by name. They work extremely hard to help him and other residents learn replacement behaviors as well as social, self-care and job skills. We, too, had to call 911 for our son's behaviors. We realized we were no longer equipped to handle them. For his safety as well as ours, we made the heart-wrenching decision to get help. Carlton Palms has been around for over 25 years helping so many individuals- and their families. It is such a shame that no one has highlighted the wonderful things they've done. They far outnumber the bad things. I guess that's not "newsworthy".

I wonder if any of you above petitioning to have this place shut down have ever been there or has their child there. Obviously NOT. My daughter has been there for over four years and I have been there several times and her support coordinator checks on her frequently. What you read in that article was simple sensationalism. There are spins put on most everything you see on the news or read in the paper.It is impossible for my child to live with me at this time. I would love to have her back in my home I miss her horribly, however, on her last trip home after she hopped over the back seat of the car and grabbed me by the hair and started punching and kicking me as I drove on the FL Turnpike I knew I made the right decision for her. She had to be taken by ambulance in restriants to the hospital to sedate her for the rest of the trip. This IS A LIFE AND DEATH matter for me and her. It was difficult enough to call 911 let alone drive the car off the highway. During our three day trip to Orlando for her birthday she had a five hour tantrum with severe self injury and aggression before hotel security intervened and called 911 and again a restrained trip to the hospital for sedation. I suffered a dislocated rib and jaw. The only way my daughter could be cared for in my home would be to have 3-4 behavior assistants with us at all times, not a lifestyle anyone would want. Carlton Palms IS THE ONLY FACILITY that will accept my child. The reality is I have NO OTHER OPTIONS. She is loved there.Her behavior has improved dramatically, she is learning, has a social life and loves it there. This is basically the same argument we had regarding restraint in the school, where my position was and will always be, if it is not your child you have no idea what the need is. If you don't want it for your child fine, DO NOT TAKE IT AWAY from my child that has no other alternative.

How could APD keep this place open without intense scrutiny and safeguards in place? Keep these children safe and close Carlton Palms until those safeguards are in place!

This is a horrible thing to see. $25 million is ridiculous. This money should go to families so they can care for the people in their homes!
