This is not an affective way to make students read more. AP students who aren't excused from summer reading will already be balancing a large quantity of work. Not only does the lack of choice take away student motivation to do the assignment, but it makes them not want to read. If the administration would like to keep summer reading, it should create guidelines for books, and then let students choose any book that meets those specific guidelines. This way, students would have a chance at enjoying (or at least tolerating) the assignment given.

Reading is good. But forcing it upon kids makes them want to rebel against it. They want to enjoy their summer and with summer reading it just adds more stress and pressure during a time when they should relax.
