I appreciate your comment as you are one of the only to contribute a good argument. However, many AP students do not know what they are getting themselves into. There are a large number of students who drop the class within the 10 day drop period or after a full semester in which they have received very poor grades. If a student is not earning a B+ or above in an honors course, an AP class may not be a good choice. Also, I saw many make the jump from college prep chemistry (below honors) to AP chemistry. It did not work out well.

If your teacher has not informed you already, the summer reading program has completely changed. Instead of writing an essay on a prompt students are now required to read the book and comprehend it in order to take a test when school starts again in the fall. In addition to this new change students now only have 2 book options, one nonfiction and one fiction based upon grade level. This new change is an effective way of getting more involvement in the program. Summer reading is now an earned 100 for a test. I do agree with this petition though because forcing summer reading upon students makes them resent Tewksbury high even more than th probably do already. By the end of the year students are mentally drained as you can see in classes at this point in the school year. This includes all of the AP students!! Although the administration may think so, we as students are NOT machines. AP students know what they're signing up for so if that is what the administration is trying to get at here they need to reevaluate their decisions.

The world isn't fair, get over it. Your statement about juniors not having to do summer reading on top of AP work is false. Only those taking certain AP's were exempt, and by exempt I mean having no choice whatsoever and being forced to read a 1000 page book on top of other assigned work. To conclude, summer reading has always been around just in different forms, to those complaining about the workload and what not, its just one book if you cant read a book by now you shouldnt be in high school.

not fair that last years juniors didn't have to do the summer reading on top of ap work and we do. and some kids are taking as many as three ap classes next year. what's the point of summer then, just keep me in school.

Like Byrnes said, "You don't learn to love reading by being forced to do summer reading, that's like saying you learn to love the country because you pay taxes", not to mention that Shakespeare, Dickens, Tolstoy, and Poe were never assigned "summer reading".
Also...
Administrator logic: "We have a wonderful English department, but 180 days was not enough time so.....MORE ASSIGNMENTS!"

I supported this petition at first, but the reasoning behind 90% of the people on this feed has completely derailed the weight of the argument. I regret signing. Unless you garner support from enough people and create an actual statement to send to administrators, you have a zero percent chance of changing anything. If you do so, I'd say about a 4% chance.

The issue with this petition and why nothing will come of it is because of the nearly illiterate comment chain. Do you really think the argument "I don't like to read" or "I can't do it because vacation" is going to sway administrators in eliminating an assignment. Also, based off these comments, it seems that there are very few who have posed the argument of eliminating summer reading for AP kids. It appears that many of you simply just want no work over the summer at all. If you can't devote time to read a single book over a two month period, then I would love to see how you handle taking 7 concurrent classes this upcoming fall. Good luck and stop whining

The school board should really take into consideration the mental health of its students. School stresses us out enough which is why we have summer vacation. Making us do even more school work over our break causes us to stress when we should be relaxing.

Why do we do summer reading if we aren't going to talk about the book all year long? The conversation about the book will only last 1 day. Also, we have plans during the summer that would be interrupted by summer reading.
