The tuition is already being raised by 3% starting next year. That is an extra $1,800 that students are being charged. To include another $300 on top of that is unfair. Staff serve the SMC community and should not have to accept a pay cut because of a profit that the school can make. Professor change lives every single day through their ability to educate. It is unfair that they will be charged to park in order to do their job.

Staff have not received raises for two years (and counting). Applying parking fees would be a major cut in pay. I approve of the waiver for staff making less than $60,000 per year and for students on financial aid, and then that fees be linked to the staff pay.

Yes, we agree! The administration was not receptive to our initial pleas for this to be eradicated. Since they insisted on going ahead without any conversation, we wanted to make some suggestions that might be a slight improvement.

This seems to additionally be a drastic change in working conditions rather than a gradual increase with a specific plan in mind. It also penalizes staff members, students, and finally faculty. In the case of staff and faculty, we have already lost benefits in respect to stalled salary increases and a reduction in retirement benefits.

I agree that many of us don't have the ability to use alternative modes of transportation because we have children and need to have a car at hand in case of emergency. Also, going from 0 to $300? I think paying $10/mo for parking is feasible = $120/year.

I would prefer opposing the entire move, but that failing, this is a good initiative.

As my course assignments get reduced every year (I've been here since 1992), my teaching evaluations get stronger, while my income gets reduced...to below a living wage.

A flat fee for parking that doesn't take wages, salary, and financial aid into account is unjustly biased in favor of SMC community members at the higher end of the compensation scale.

Staff should not have to pay $200 for parking. I don't make that much money

It is unethical for SMC to charge students, staff, and faculty to park. It is bad enough that a lot of the parking spaces in certain lots are now visitor spots in which people have to pay. Tuition is already an arm and a leg and it is not fair that parking would just be another thing that people would have to pay for.

I worked at Mills College for 10 yrs & during that time they charged $50 a year, which feels more manageable a charge than $300. The fact is, SMC is not an easily & quickly accessible through public transportation. For those of us with families, we need to be able to have our cars on campus in case of emergency. Unless our pay is going up, a $300 charge is outrageous.

Parking cost is unnecessary and unwarranted given the cost to attend and stay on campus should cover parking.

In an effort to keep the costs under control for all people at St. Mary's, a flat fee should not be allowed!
