I am a grade 7 student studying in Gems World Academy, Dubai, and was horrified to learn how plastic trash is destroying our oceans. Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and kill thousands of marine animals. Every year about 1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic marine litter worldwide. Out of the millions of tons of debris floating around in the oceans, 80% is plastic. Plastic is not biodegradable. Did you know that a plastic bottle takes 450 years to break down?
Let us take the pledge to take small steps to reduce ocean pollution by saying no to plastic:-
1) Carry your own reusable bag to the grocery store instead of carrying single use plastic bags.
2) Carry a reusable bottle.
3) Say no to plastic straws! Next time you order a drink, think about whether you really need the straw.
4) Carry your reusable coffee-cup. Tell your local cafe to start giving discounts if people bought in their own cup.
5) Say no to disposable plastic cutlery.
6) Avoid buying excessively packaged food.
7) Give up bottled water.

I was just looking at the ocean data again and honestly it is so much worse than I initially realized but then I see the comments you all are leaving and it gives me this weird spark of energy. Some of you have been sending me photos of your reusable setups and my inbox is honestly overflowing in the best way possible because it makes me realize we are actually doing something here instead of just staring at the problem.

I really thought this might just be a school project but looking at how many people are actually behind this now feels kind of wild. It makes me realize that maybe we can stop this mess if enough people just stop using plastic straws for a second and think about the birds.

I agree with Richard and I pledge to uphold this fight for to minimize the use of plastic bags
I am proud of this 7 grade child for taking the initiative in making people aware of the environment. If we all as adults were little more mindful , the children would not have to worry about the hazards caused by the indiscriminate use of plastic.
I support the petition fully .I carry my cloth bag for shopping & avoid plastic wherever possible.
Public awareness is pivotal...n when it comes from a young girl like rucha it is more impactful.....well done dear....
