All over this country, women are being revictimized by police departments regarding filing violations against a perpetrator. When a woman files an order for protection or a no contact harassment restraining order, the police are obligated to enforce that order. They are not being enforced. Women are being victimized by the police and protecting the perpetrator. Women are instructed to file an incident report each time a violation occurs with an order in place. 90% of the time, police officers are calling the stalker or perpetrator indicating that they need to get his side of the story. That is a job of the courts, not the police. If a woman is relocated and they do this, their new location is immediately compromised making it necessary for the victim to relocate again. At this point, she may not have the funds and the funds may not be available to her through a DV agency and she is then in a lethal position and at risk of being further harmed or killed. This practice needs to end. A judge determines an order for protection. The police's job is to enforce it. Although there may be instances that a false order is obtained, however normally this is done by the perpetrator in an effort to continue to stalk and harass their victim to flush them out. The criminal justice system is not working for victims/survivors. They are forced to endure further abuse by the police and the courts and this needs to end. It can start here.
