The council has agreed to implement one hour of free parking for our town center. This win belongs to every one of the 374 people who backed this campaign and pushed local officials to listen. Keep a close eye on the rollout to ensure they follow through on their promise.

Final supporters
The Barnet Society has presented detailed proposals to Councillor Dean Cohen, the council cabinet member responsible for parking within the borough. We have asked for the support of the Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Cornelius, and the three High Barnet councillors, Councillor David Longstaff, Councillor Bridget Perry and Councillor Wendy Prentice. We have also called on the Chipping Barnet MP Mrs Theresa Villiers to back the campaign.
We believe the current parking regime of payment by phone or credit card is pernicious and off putting when local people can choose to visit neighbouring shopping centres which make no charge whatsoever for car parking.

Currently I never shop in Barnet, I got to Potters Bar where I can get free parking. Apart from the inconvenience, in these days when our income is consistently stretched I see no point in stretching it further through adding parking charges to the cost of my shopping.
We tend to avoid Barnet for shopping and go to places that we do not have to pay, and we live here! For the High Street to survive the council need to make it easier for people to nip in and out otherwise the business will all go online and then the council will be earning nothing!!
A free period for parking would be a greater incentive to shop for a few things. We are are finding the the Spires increasingly more expensive, so to be able to park in the centre of Barnet for a quick visit would be very welcome.
The parking in Barnet is ridiculous and the prices reflect the council's need to collect revenue rather than to encourage shoppers. New businesses come and go in Barnet too quickly and this may be in part due to the expensive parking so driving customers to cheaper shopping areas.
nobody comes to Barnet anymore, there are no shops to entice people and the parking is difficult. The 'one hour free parking' would help the situation, encourage people to come back and help build our dwindling high street.

The costs in The Spires Car Park has rocketed over the past 10 years from 20p an hour to circa £1.50 why would anyone bother to shop here when its its free in so many other spaces. Rip-off car parks again killing business!!!
