Stop of proliferation of organic products in the produce market.
Environmentalists often exaggerate the harmfulness of pesticides, claiming that they cause cancer and disease. However, these studies are not based on scientific findings, and may in fact be driven by purely political motives. One major argument against conventional farming is its characteristic use of pesticides (which allows conventional farming to be more productive). Contrary to the opinions of environmentalists, there is no evidence to support the claims that pesticides are in any way unhealthy. Tests by Consumers Union have lead to the belief that organic produce has less pesticide residue than does nonorganic produce. However, according to a toxicologist at UC-Davis, this residue is not consumed at high enough quantities to be harmful in any way. Even if someone were to consume ten thousands times the amount of pesticides on conventional produce, they would still remain unharmed. There is no evidence to support the assertion that organic food is healthier than conventional food. Although organic produce has more vitamin C and iron, the average person is not lacking in either. Organic food is actually riskier to consume, in that the amount of bacteria (including E. coli) is greater in organic produce than in nonorganic produce. Scientists say that conventional produce might actually be more healthy than organic produce. Organic farmers often use manure to fertilize their crops, increasing the likliehood of bacteria infestation (including E.coli). Because organic farming is not as efficient as its nonorganic counterpart, conventional farming should be the predominate source of produce. To use organic farming would be to limit the Earth's most effective use of its limited resources. Rice, one of the most widely consumed agricultural products on the market, will be first to run out. This could prove catastrophic to those areas of the world dependent on rice. Without a total switch to conventional farming, it is unlikely that rice, along with many other grains, will be able to meet demand. With demand for agricultural products rising worldwide, it is the moral oblicgation of farmings around the world to increase production. This will not be possible with organic farming, because it is so inefficient. The only way to meet rising demand is to increase the amount of conventional farming. The inefficiency of organic food as compared to conventional farming is unacceptable, considering likely increased demand for food in the near future.
