Attention problems such as Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder seem to be a wide spread epidemic plaguing the
international community today. “Attention-deficit hyperactivity Disorder
affects 8-12 % of children world wide” (Biederman & Faraone) and the United
States has witnessed a “10 fold increase” (Christakis, 2008) in ADHD cases in
the past twenty years. According to the Center for Disease Control the percentage
of children ranging from 4 to 17 years taking ADHD medication has increased
from 4.8% in 2007 to 6.1 percent in 2011.
It has been suggested that attention deficit
disorders such as ADHD are instigated not only by inert genetic factors but by
environmental factors as well. The main
environmental factor of concern to date is that of television viewing. This is
of great alarm being that children as young as two years old are spending “30-40% of their waking hours watching
television” (Christakis, 2008).
Being that Americans have more televisions in their homes than they do bathrooms action must be taken to prevent todays youth from developing attention deficit disorders due to television viewing. This petition calls for legislative action to be taken tomonitorthe content put on T.V. We are looking to construct a team of highly trained individuals in the filed of Children andAdolescentHealth Studies to control what is and is notsafe to be put on television for children to see.
Lets stop this wide spread epidemic together! Sign this petition to show your support for the regulation of child television content put on television now! Lets put safe and educational shows on television that will require viewer interaction, real time scene changes, and minimal viewing time.
