Llantrisant War Memorial
I have recently become aware that a planning application has been submitted to the Local Planning Authority for the erection of the much anticipated Llantrisant War Memorial.
The sterling efforts over many years by the committee (which the people of the town, myself included have supported wholeheartedly) appears to have come to fruition but I feel compelled to raise a number of personal concerns as to the proposed location of this structure.
I need to say from the outset that I am a local boy and from a service family and fully appreciate the effects that war can have on families. My grandfather was a regular with the South Wales Borders before the outbreak of the Great War and would spend four winters in Flanders and see action in the three battles of Ypres – gassed twice and return home safely along with his three younger brothers who all saw action.
His eldest son, my father, sailed out of the Clyde on September 3rd 1939 – one of the first group of vessels to sail in convoy formation and would spend five years in the battle of the Atlantic and witness over that time, multitudes of deaths with ships being sunk and blown up around him. There are millions of stories like mine and it is for these reasons I salute the work of the fundraising committee who has championed the cause.
However, this War Memorial cannot be allowed to be erected on the Bull Ring and I shall lay out my reasoning behind this opinion because there is a much bigger picture to this matter that the War Memorial Committee should have considered.
I have sat on the Llantrisant Town Trust for many years and for the past six of these have worked tirelessly with my fellow Trustees to develop a scheme of work which has attracted almost £1.1million of funding to transform our ancient Guildhall into the historical and cultural centre of the old town and one which will have a regional impact – attracting tourists, visitors, historians to the town and become the
