We are retiring to Hovland, MN and have 2 dogs that we would be devastated to loose while exercising in the woods around our home or nearby. Please help change the rules to keep us all safe, including our loving pets, while enjoying the Minnesota outdoors.

Dear State Legislators, I am writing because I am a veterinarian practicing in Two Harbors, MN. Approximately 10 years ago I had a dog presented by its physician owner that was choking slowly to death because of being caught in a Conibear trap. The dog had been caught in the trap for approximately 45 minutes that it had wandered into on a commonly used public recreation area. The trap was partially crushing the dog's larynx and it was just barely conscious on arrival. It presented to my clinic after a frantic 30 minute transport by the owner, unfortunately none of us knew how to release the trap. It was choking this dog to death in our arms and we were helpless to stop this tragedy. Fortunately, my veterinary technician thought of cutting it off with a hacksaw we had in the practice, but this took several minutes and the dog nearly died during the process. The dog survived, but the owner had his hand badly bitten initially trying to get the trap off and the dog was choking for a horrifying 30 minute car ride to our office. We purchased a large boltcutter that is hanging on a wall in our practice that is available to immediately cut a trap off if we ever need to do this again. These Conibear traps are out in the woods where people commonly walk their dogs and it is apparent from the 12/19/20 Duluth News Tribune article that the trappers are not going to take action to protect dogs until a law is passed in the Minnesota State Legislature. The use of leg hold traps is also a hideous process if you ever see an animal that has been maimed by these inhumane devices. I am a veterinarian, and it is my sworn duty to protect animals from cruel and inhumane treatment. I have no qualms asking you to pass any legislation that will eliminate risks to dogs or to ban leg hold traps in the State of Minnesota. Please get this legislation passed. One of my dogs was caught in a leg hold trap within sight of the public road we walk daily. I not only support the efforts of this organization, I strongly support requiring traps be placed a certain distance from any public road or trail, and signage indicating the trap is there.

What we need to is stop drivers from killing dogs ! they kill far more then traps do. People are driven 10 miles an hour over the speed limits in residential areas and country roads. When they murder your dog or cat they just leave on the road and then other people road the animal over turning it into bloody pile. Most of these low lives are from the cities who have no respect for rural area. Too progressive to follow the speed limit and watch the road.
