As a building owner, in the last two years I have had insurance claims that were nightmarish in nature. A person was illegally added as a co-payee on my property insurance. It required legal action to have his name removed from my insurance policy. In the last five months my premises was driven into by a vehicle and damaged extensively. The insurance company refused to provide proof of structural integrity via an engineer's report and attempted to force repair work to take place to cover up the damages. The treatment that I received from the insurance company, the Fair Practices Office and the Insurance Council of Saskatchewan was at times rude, demeaning, dismissive and not responsive. I felt they were using intimidation and fear tactics to force a lower settlement for damages to my property. I feel the adjuster's actions to resolve this issue are based on conduct unbecoming. I have been left in horrible living conditions with total disregard for my circumstances by the insurance company for five months. Claimant's need more information on the settlement process, better regulatory bodies, penalties for insurance company's delaying claim settlement and an organization that supports and works for claimant only. To date I have been in contact with over 150 people who have had insurance claim horror stories. Many spoke of feeling villainized and deliberately uninformed so they appeared stupid. I want to see change so that future policy holders do not experience the claim nightmares that we have experienced. There are 1.13 million people in the Province of Saskatchewan. Approximately 1 million of those people must carry property and vehicle insurance. The average person will spend a minimum of $300.00 per month for those insurances. This nets a minimum of about $3,000,000.00 per month for insurance companies. We are the individuals that make their income possible yet we have the least input. It is time to be treated with dignity and respect by insurance companies, adjusters and brokers.
