Currently, there are no strictly, uniformly enforced laws at the federal or state level that adequately protect dogs against the psychological and physical harm that occurs in the breeding and puppy mill industry. Far too many breeders that register according to current USDA guidelines do not adhere to those minimal guidelines, and enforcement is severely lacking or nonexistent. The unknown numbers of breeders who don’t bother to register their “business” at all continue to prosper at the expense of the animals under their control.

Too many breeders subject innocent animals to live their entire life caged under horrific conditions for financial gain. Animals are not breeding machines. They are living beings that feel hunger, thirst, lonliness, and pain, and they are powerless to change the situation in which they live and are at the mercy of the person who determines what that is.

Simply acknowledging the cruelty of this business enterprise without lifting a finger to help is to give silent consent. Make a difference by writing and calling your elected representatives and demanding long overdue oversight and reform to this shameful industry.
