Westgate in Huddersfield has been an illegal parking hotspot for years. Multiple complaints have been made to Kirklees council about this problem but unfortunately we are no further forward in terminating the problem. Often the illegal parking hot spot is cluttered with high end cars who do not see council traffic enforcement officers as a deterrent. The illegal parking issue forces pedestrians to walk into the road, backs up traffic on the ring road when buses can't get passed and encourages other drivers into oncoming traffic. We ask that something is done before a serious accident occurs. We ask that railings or flower beds are installed to stop cars illegally parking on the pavement in addition to installing hatching on the road to encourage cars to stop parking and blocking the road. This will promote road safety and encourage those who do illegally park to use the designated pay and display parking which is adequately available in and around the town centre.

Updates

August 12, 2019

I have submitted a formal request for a meeting with the Kirklees Council highways department to discuss the installation of physical barriers on Westgate. My focus is now on securing a timeline for this site inspection to move beyond the current impasse.

August 12, 2019

The volume of support has now reached a point where we can formally request a meeting with the local council office. My next step is to deliver this petition documentation to the planning department along with our specific proposal for installing permanent physical barriers on Westgate.

It especially is a problem of an evening outside Bronx clothing on Westgate in Huddersfield. Cars are now parking on the pavement, and I've had to walk out into the road to get past them, facing oncoming traffic

There are plenty of parking wardens doing the rounds. Can’t we make a concerted effort to ticket these cars each day until it stops? I suspect this might be an unfortunate by product of the police no longer handling illegal parking and the offenders being well aware of that. It seems like clear antisocial behaviour to me if it’s happening regularly with no regard for pedestrians or bus drivers.

As an ex bus driver, these arrogant, ignorant, selfish individuals (and that's being very polite) need knocking down a peg or two.

Why are they still allowed to park on the pavement. I watched a lady with a double buggy who had to go in the road to get passed the car with a DOUBLE BUGGY.

It will only be a matter of time before someone is injured. Why not install flower beds. This will improve the appearance of the area and could help reduce traffic emissions.

Parking outside circle fashion shop Westgate is getting seriously out of hand, I have been emailing kirklees council for more than 12 months now and they are basically ignoring me

The total arrogance of these people is mind blowing. The law should be that if a car is parked illegally and is hit by another then it is the fault of the illegal parker.

This can not be ignored any longer.. If this was in London they would have their cars towed.
