PETITION TO BAN ILLEGAL NETTING ON THE LOWER ZAMBEZI RIVER.

TO: The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife/ Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority ( Zimparks ) and the Ministry of Tourism

The Petition of the undersigned declares that :
Illegal netting on the Lower Zambezi River is rapidly depleting indigenous fish stocks, including the iconic tiger fish, bream, chessa, nkupe and other species.
This destructive practice decimates the aquatic ecosystem and directly threatens the livelihoods of local communities reliant on sustainable tourism and artisanal angling.

Therefore, your petitioners request that the authorities :

1. Increase antipoaching patrols and strictly enforce existing fishing regulations along the river.
2. Impose harsher penalties and confiscate equipment from individuals engaging in illegal netting.
3. Establish designated conservation zones to allow fish breeding grounds to recover.

Can’t afford to lose the Tiger Fish, which is iconic fish in the Zambezi river and plays a critical part of the ecosystem in the Zambezi river. Catching fish with nets is a huge problem because it kills any fish and all the fish and it’s not a sustainable way of catching fish.

Illegal netting is killing the enjoyment of taking a fishing holiday on the zambezi river I have fished there for 50 years and in recent times the fishing has been very unproductive

Stop the netting or loose the tourist industry to the lower Zambezi. Tourists and locals go there for the tiger fishing experience.

Agree , guests have witnessed mosquito nets are being used . This is also impacting birdlife , a bird was seen that had netting around its beak

There are few places left in the world to appreciate nature and its environment. The future of the Zambezi fish is crucial.
