The province's attorney general is considering asking questions on duality in child care when approaching the New Brunswick Court of Appeal on whether sending both anglophone and francophone children to school on the same bus is constitutional.
Michel Doucet, a U de M law professor, has called for Education Minister Serge Rousselle to raise the issue of whether bilingual daycares should exist when he goes to court to seek a reference on buses.
Rousselle says he is aware of Doucet's request.
"I take note of the recommendation. " he said, declining to comment further.
Rousselle said last week that he will ask the New Brunswick Court of Appeal to rule on whether bilingual school buses violate the province's dual French and English system as quaranteed in the Constitution.
The government wants clarification of the province's obligation and responsibilities. "
Rousselle said he hopes to have questions drafted and before the court by September.
Doucet states that approved child daycare facilities in New Brunswick follow either an anglophone or francophone curriculum provided by the provincial government.
But he said there are bilingual daycares in the province, Doucet questioning whether they should be permitted under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which guarantees the duality in education for linguistic groups in minority communities.
Current provincial rules allow bilingual daycares.
"But as soon as we start talking about educational institutions it does bring up the charter," Doucet said. " If we are going to be calling them educational institutions, and the government is going to force them to apply a curriculum, then it has to be either French or English,it can't be bilingual."
Tory Official Languages critic Madeline Dube said on Thursday that the decision is the Liberal government's to make.

Daycare prices are outrages...I will be returning to work in July and will only be bringing home $145.00 per week to feed and put gas in my vechile for a family of four. There will be no money left over for any repairs or anything else for my family because of the prices of daycare. How is a middle class family suppose to live on this. it would be nice to see our daycare systems be more affordable for a family to live. Having two children in daycares is costing us over one thousand dollars a month.

I lost the qifs, and my family was desperately effected by this. We lost $1100 per month. Who can afford that? Would the politicians that' made this decision willing to lose $1100 off his pay next month??

Government has shown that there is a price limit/cap on spending for education and healthcare in NB as we have all seen in 302 teaching jobs being cut and privatization of service in hospitals and these are essential services! The one thing government will not discuss.....has NO price limit/cap and the vast majority of NBers have NO use for.

This is so sad. Both my kids have been able to go to preschool when they were 3 and 4. And I was able to afford it. Education is so important and if they do this then the schools are going to have to raise their prices which will make it hard for anyone to afford. The government might save money but it will be all the children who will suffer from this. It's not right.
