Forced marriages affected millions of people each year. By definition, Forced Marriages are when one or both of the participating parties do not give their consent to the marriage or are being forced against their will. Many people are beaten or threatened if they do not go ahead with the marriage, some are even taken abroad without knowing they are to be married. People are also told that they will bring shame upon their families if they don't proceed with the marriage. In 2010 the FMU (Forced Marriage Unit) tackled 1735 actual or possible cases of forced marriage including British Nationals. Almost 1/3 were under the age of 18.
